Does Acupuncture Hurt?
Acupuncture consists of the gentle insertion and stimulation of thin, disposable, sterile needles at strategic points near the surface of the body. The needles are much finer than the familiar hypodermic needle. Therefore, in most cases there is no discomfort.
When needles are inserted there can be a heavy, achy or tingly sensation near or along the pathway of the needled site. In Oriental Medicine, this is known as the 'arrival of the Qi (or Ki in Korean)' and is an indication that the body's healing powers have been stimulated. Acupuncture has been proven to stimulate the release of opiate-like hormones and normally induces a deep state of relaxation, balance and healing.
